Just as it seemed that everyone associated with the remarkable case of St. Brigid's was going to ride off contentedly into the sunset, a voice from the neighborhood pipes up with some concerns. The latest edition of The Villager contains an opinion piece, New St. Brigid’s must be more than a ‘vanilla box’ by Roland Legiardi-Laura. The author expresses his concerns about the scope and nature of the restoration. I think it bears reading.

It's an interesting article and it raises some important questions. I appreciate the fact that restoration is referred to with ironic quotation marks fore and aft. Few people will disagree with the characterization of Cardinal Egan's spokesperson as being "incendiary." It should be pointed out however that we are still awaiting our new archbishop and there is no guarantee that he will be a cardinal (as the article seems to imply). I appreciate Mr. Legiardi-Laura's call for a more transparent design and bidding process for St. Brigid's.
