"The New York Observer" publishes a thoughtful and balanced piece about our plight

Every morning I scour the news in hope that a comprehensive and balanced piece about our church will appear in the press or on the net.

Today my hopes were met by a "New York Observer" article, Cardinal Egan Paints Himself an Unhappy Ending, subtitled "A church closing turns ugly as valuables are carted off and a fresco is covered."

Grant Gallicho presents a concise history of our situation and places it in the context of Cardinal Egan's tenure as Archbishop of New York. Please read this article and don't hesitate to comment.

This is the the most comprehensive account I have read about the archdiocesan treachery behind the closing of the church. As a member of the parish I have been deeply saddened by the events of this year and Cardinal Egan's complicity in what amounts to the desecration of a holy space. What is wrong with the cardinal? Does he not realize that everything that his "security" crew found in that place was paid for by the labor of the hard-working people of God? What does it take for the church hierarchy to get the message that they are the beneficiaries of the laity's largesse? It is not going to be long before the seemingly endless wellspring of our money is no longer available to support a hierarchy that is unaware of the origins of its own wealth. Every church that Cardinal Egan closes brings diminishing church attendance and less money for the mission of the church. His legacy will sadly be perhaps the most worthless in the history of the New York archdiocese.
