Condos Rising in Place of Mary Help of Christians, Contrary to Joseph Zwilling's 2007 Pronouncement

Condos Rise Where an East Village Church Once Stood,  an article in the Real Estate section of todays New York Times describes the condos going up on the former site of the much beloved Mary Help of Christians.  The details:

  • $old by the Archdiocese of New York for $41 million
  • Name: Steiner East Village
  • Seven stories
  • 87 apartments
  • One bedroom prices start at  $1.1 million
The lush amenities seem to provide habitat for a much different species and don't include a chapel.  Author C.J. Hughes accurately portrays the history.

Mary Help of Christians was one of OLV's sisters in resistance to closure back in 2007.  A 2007 Daily News Article titled "Diocese Won't Sell Property" quotes archdiocesan spokesman Joseph Zwilling as saying, "selling those properties is not something that is going to happen."
