Opinion: The Hidden Consequences of the Faith-Based Affordable Housing Act

“Many faith-based institutions are stewards of historically significant sites that contribute to New York’s collective cultural heritage. The push towards developing these sites into apartment buildings…poses a threat to preserving this heritage.”




This was written by Daniel J. O'Donnell, a NYC Assembly member who represents District 69, an area that covers Manhattan Valley, Morningside Heights, and the Upper West Side.  As pending legislation risks incentivizing religious organizations to close houses of worship and schools in return for revenue, Mr. O'Donnell describes how this has already played out for The Cathedral of Saint John, which is in his district.
