"A lot of pain for our community" - Channel 12 Westchester Covers the St. Mary Merger with St. Peter/St. Denis

The item is titled "St. Mary's parishioners prepare for Mass schedule change amid merger,"  I think the title should be "A Lot of Pain for Our Community".   This comment was offered by parishioner Isidoro Acevedo when interviewed by Channel 12 reporter Jade Nash.

As frequently occurs when dealing with the archdiocese, some things made no sense.

  • A line of Ms. Nash's script stated "...the archdiocese announced that the church was in need of major repairs to continue regular services."  Yet, 2 Masses weekly are "regular services."  In addition, the chapel will be open a few hours daily for prayer, also pretty regular.  Obviously, the condition of the building has no bearing on the number, frequency or regularity of the services.
  • The Latino/Hispanic congregation of St. Mary's is quite large.  Why isn't the archdiocese having the Spanish Masses celebrated at St. Mary's?  There there is a parking lot and Our Lady of Guadalupe is already standing in a lovely garden that befits her.
To my eye it looks like St. Mary's church is being set up for a future analect, I mean statement, that the archdiocese is greatly saddened to say that, despite their best efforts, St. Mary's cannot be sustained by the meagre attendance at the 1 English Mass.

Watch the item on Channel 12 and draw your own conclusions: St. Mary's parishioners prepare for Mass schedule change amid merger
