Notes from Tuesday's Demonstration for St. Mary's

Shortly before  6:00 PM on Tuesday people began to arrive from all directions, many carrying signs on posterboard and one bearing the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  Organizer Miguel first addressed the crowd, admonishing us that feelings are not enough, that the archdiocese had a plan and that we have a plan and that we have to show up in order to save St. Mary's.  Next, Izzy greeted everyone and began the Rosary.  To the tune of Marian hymns in Spanish, we processed up Broadway, then down New Main where many residents were enjoying the relative cool of the evening in their folding chairs.  There were a lot of fist bumps and encouragement along the way.  We slowly climbed the hill where City Hall sat on its pinnacle then descended to South Broadway ending in front of St. Mary's where we were greeted by beautiful blooms of roses and daisies in front of the rectory.  A firm but friendly police presence shepherded us all the way.  The people I spoke to were hurt and angry about the merger and the way it has been handled.  They were all pretty sure that the whole thing is about money.
