Linksmu Kaledu from Our Lady of Vilnius, c. 2007

This photo was taken on Christmas eve, 2006:  The last Christmas that Our Lady of Vilnius was open.  The illuminated figures must have been a source of inspiration to motorists making the turn off of Varick and then idling in wait to enter the Holland Tunnel.

Our Lady of Vilnius was as humble as the stable in Bethlehem. That is one of the reasons I loved it. The creche was humble, too: molded plastic figures that looked like they came from the '60's. Lit from within, they brought beauty to the desolation of the traffic jam.
